Ibsen Year 2006 was launched in New York on 1 March during an event at the prestigious Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York. The event at BAM on 1 March was completely in the spirit of Ibsen. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs´ Ibsen exhibition "To be a poet is to see - Ibsen in our time", was on show in the theatre´s lobby. Norway´s Consulate General in New York, which was responsible for the event, took the opportunity of launching a series of seminars entitled "Nora´s Sisters" in which the aim is to focus on women and equality by putting Ibsen´s female profiles in a contemporary political framework and a development political female perspective. At the same time as this in New York the annual meeting of the United Nation´s Commission on the Status of Women was being held. Many central United Nations figures, feminists as well as Ibsen scholars (among them Toril Moi from Duke University) were present during the event. Minister of Equality Karita Bekkemellem who was also present at the UN meeting, had the honour of presenting The Ibsen Centennial Award to Cate Blanchett.

Sydney Theatre Company´s production of "Hedda Gabler" marks the opening of the highly renowned BAM´s impressive celebration of Ibsen Year. In April the theatre will be host to a visiting performance of Robert Wilson´s production of "Peer Gynt" from 2005. In October the National Theatre´s staging of "The Wild Duck", produced by Eirik Stubøs will be shown during the Next Wave Festival.
